Accessible by default
Semantic structure, keyboard access, clear feedback, usable forms, and interfaces that do not leave people guessing.
Web Developer
Story City, Iowa
I’m a web developer with more than 20 years of experience building websites, applications, and digital tools.
I care about work that is clear, useful, accessible, and built to hold up outside of a perfect demo.
How I got here
My path into web development was not especially direct.
Before web development became my career, music was the thing I spent most of my time pursuing. I started playing drums in bands in the late 1980s and spent years performing in both original and cover bands.
It never became the way I paid the bills, but it gave me a lot of great experiences. It also taught me how to listen, collaborate, adapt, and keep working at something until all the pieces come together.
Those lessons have carried over into the way I approach development.
More than two decades on the web
I enjoy the point where design, front-end development, accessibility, and real business needs meet.
Over the years, I’ve worked on newspaper websites, client projects, high-volume subscription pages, internal tools, and full-stack applications.
A lot of my professional work has involved improving existing systems rather than starting from scratch. That means understanding the business rules already in place, finding practical ways to modernize the experience, and making changes without breaking what people depend on.
View my experienceWhat I care about
I like interfaces that are easy to understand and code that another developer can follow.
Semantic structure, keyboard access, clear feedback, usable forms, and interfaces that do not leave people guessing.
Layouts and interactions should work across devices and remain reliable when the content or conditions are less than ideal.
I value clear structure, sensible naming, reusable patterns, and code that another developer can understand later.
I like understanding how the interface connects to APIs, authentication, databases, testing, and deployment.
Away from the keyboard
I like projects that reward patience, repetition, and attention to detail.
A newer interest
More recently, I’ve been learning about knife sharpening and the precision behind restoring a good edge. I like work that rewards patience, attention to detail, and steady improvement.
A change of pace
Music is still part of my life, even if I no longer spend every waking hour behind a drum kit. Long walks are another good way to step away from a screen, clear my head, and work through a problem.
The common thread
Whether I’m working on an interface, learning a new framework, playing drums, or trying to improve an edge, I’m drawn to the same things: craft, problem-solving, and the satisfaction of getting the details right.
